2019 ESC Guidelines on diabetes, pre-diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases developed in collaboration with the EASD

The Task Force for diabetes, pre-diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) European Heart Journal 2020;42:255-323

These guidelines provide direction on the management and prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in subjects with, and at risk of developing, diabetes mellitus (DM). This follows an unprecedented increase in the evidence base linking diabetes with a two-fold excess risk of vascular outcomes (coronary heart disease, ischaemic stroke and vascular deaths), independent of other risk factors. As a result, more up to date guidance on how to prevent and manage the effects of DM on the heart and vasculature is needed. Key changes in these updated guidelines include new lipid targets, changes to glucose lowering and monitoring, HbA1c screening in CVD and routine testing of microalbuminuria to identify patients at risk of developing renal dysfunction and/or CVD.
